Moving on from DeviantArt, Newgrounds is now my Home for Everything!

Posted by tylermsa - August 6th, 2024

Since 2021, I have had both a DeviantArt (DA) and a Newgrounds account. Initially, I've used DA to share all of my artwork, while I used Newgrounds to play some of their games and try to share some mediocre music I made back in the day. But over time, I found the Newgrounds community to be more of a friendlier and safer community versus DA, because after years of putting up with their AI scraping, their constant pushing for me to buy a subscription to make my experience "better", and their failure to moderate the obscene amount of porn that gets through the strictest of filters, I've honestly had enough of DeviantArt. Even though I've had as minimal of a stake to DA as possible, other people on the site with significant stake have also had enough of their bullshit, and are leaving and/or ghosting the site in droves.

In the past year, I started sharing art onto Newgrounds as an experiment, and I found out that I get more honest engagement though NG than what DA could have ever given me. And as stated before, I felt more at home sharing art on Newgrounds than on DA. Which is why, after months of transitioning, I am moving all of my operations to here.

With that being said, my DA will not be deleted, and all of my older art from the site will remain up, but there is a very slim chance that I will be coming back to DA again. It was a bit of a good run on DA, but now its time to move onto to something that fits more on my views of art and my sense of community.

Thank you for the flattery - 'we' think we are cooler than dA as well... ;)

Full disclosure, though: NG 'also' offers a subscription ("supporter") to make your experience "better". Some of the perks unlock permanently. So if you just want chat access or double your inbox space (instead of sorting through that mess), paying for a single month would do.

Yeah, I realized that. Thought the difference between being a Newgrounds supporter vs a DA Core member is that the DA constantly tells me to upgrade to core with 50-70% deals, and "first month free" deals, and the main perk that come with it is earning slightly more money, which is something that I don't do with my art. NG's subscriptions seemed to be rooted more into charity, where you have the choice to donate or become a paying supporter, which makes more sense to me.

Yeah, NG is more like: "Do you want to chuck us a dollar, can we budget with your continued support, or do you just want some perks?"
